Sito and Pöyry Oy are jointly responsible for planning the extension of the west metro from Matinkylä to Soukka. Sito will design the section from Matinkylä to Kaitaa, including the Finnoo station. Sito is responsible for rock and geotechnical engineering in this area.
“The Finnoo area is extremely challenging,” says Jannis Mikkola from Sito. “There is no rock exposure in this area at all, and, in places, the rock is covered by very thick layers of soil. The metro also runs under a valuable wetland area. When the Espoo sewage treatment plan eventually moves from the area further north to Blominmäki, the Finnoo station will be part of an entirely new district,” adds Mikkola. Excavations in Sito’s area of responsibility will begin at the end of 2015 and be completed in around 2017. The west metro extension will be open for traffic in 2020 at the earliest.
