Rock engineering work underway at Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant in Espoo

The construction of the wastewater treatment plant for the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) is a major municipal engineering site. Sito is responsible for the construction management services for the rock engineering contracts.

“This is certainly one of the most important construction projects for rock engineering contracts in Sito’s history – both in terms of scope and duration,” Jouni Maidell, Sito’s Head of Department, Infrastructure Project Management, notes with satisfaction.

The excavation of the caves for the wastewater treatment plant being built in Blominmäki, Espoo, started in mid-September. The construction work for the plant is due to begin in early 2018. According to plans, the construction work at Blominmäki will be completed in 2020, when wastewater treatment and sludge processing will be transferred from Suomenoja to Blominmäki.

Sito’s Project Management Sector is responsible for the construction services for the wastewater treatment plant’s rock engineering contracts and sewage tunnels. The service package also includes worksite supervision (RT16-11122) and safety coordinator tasks. Our expert project organization includes Sito employees with recent experience of similar demanding rock engineering projects in Jätkäsaari, Posiva’s nuclear waste disposal facility, west metro, and the construction of the underground spaces for the Tapiola central parking facility.

It is indicative of the scale of the project that, by the end of 2017, a total of 910,000 cubic meters of rock will be excavated through three work tunnels. The contractor is Lemminkäinen Infra Oy.

Once the Blominmäki caves have been excavated, construction of the treatment plant will commence. Water treatment will take place underground, while the aboveground sections of the plant will house the administrative and repair shop buildings, among others.

The Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant is estimated to cost EUR 371 million. The excavation will cost approximately EUR 59,730,000.
